Bios

  • Beverly Downen is the driving force behind Downen Creative Studios. She is an author, professional cosplayer, and costume designer. Known for her high-quality costumes inspired by pop culture icons and her own unique designs, her passion for crafting with EVA foam is a hallmark of her work. She has collaborated with industry giants such as Marvel, Worbla, Smooth-On, PlastiDip, Siser, Famore, Beatrice Forms, and Surebonder. Beverly has been featured on platforms like Adam Savage's Tested, Be Amazed, and Marvel.com. Her 240-page how-to book "Cosplayer's Ultimate Guide to EVA Foam" was published in 2022 and was featured as one of Adam Savage's Favorite Things of 2023! Additionally, she is the founder and executive producer of SheProp, a maker forum for female, non-binary, and transgender cosplayers.

  • Beverly of Downen Creative creates quality multimedia content focused on providing cosplayers a wider range of learning tools to help them create costumes and props. Beverly’s overarching goal is to bring her unique knowledge of building processes and techniques to cosplayers of all skill levels, to encourage her fellow makers to create, learn and inspire each other, as well as be positive role models within the maker community.

She has been a cosplay guest, cosplay judge and instructor at many conventions across the US, and has been featured on Adam Savage’s Tested and the popular Be Amazed. She is also a brand ambassador for several companies including PlaidFX, Micro-Mark and Thibra, and has created written and video tutorials that can be found across social media. In 2018 she was commissioned by Marvel to create a replica of the Wasp costume from the blockbuster movie Ant-Man and the Wasp for the web series “Marvel Becoming”.

Her 240-page how-to book Cosplayer's Ultimate Guide to EVA Foam was released at the end of 2022 and is now available everywhere. Her tutorials have been published in The Cosplay Journal, Cos Culture Magazine, CosplayCentral.com, Cohaku, and to-date has co-written several tutorial articles with her husband in the last few years.

Beverly's primary goal is to continually encourage artists to confidently acquire new maker skills. When she isn’t working on a new project, she can usually be found editing instructional video tutorials and full costume build write-ups to foster a positive and encouraging community of makers. She enjoys giving others a thorough look at her build processes, and she strives to provide detailed write-ups of each of her builds whenever possible. Her mantra is to be as transparent as possible, and she is always willing to share her successes and failures along the way.

Her passion projects are all community focused; she has founded several maker/builder Facebook groups with the goal of fostering a positive and supportive environment for cosplayers and makers alike. In 2018 she founded SheProp!, a rapidly growing group created for female, non-binary, two spirit and transgender prop makers and costumers. Beverly also hosts, produces and edits the ShePropTalk! Podcast and is the executive producer for all SheProp projects.

It's hard to believe this all started with a Darth Vader mask and a free weekend with the kids. Check out our little Origin Story!
